Term: |
A-B Test |
|
Description: |

Term: |
A-V Receiver |
|
Description: |
An electronic component combining many audio and video functions: AM and FM tuners, surround-sound decoders, power amplifiers, source selection, volume and tone controls, etc. |

Term: |
A-Weighting |
|
Description: |
A-weighting rolls off high frequencies above about 7 kHz. Sound levels measured using these weightings are designated dB (A), dB(B), dB(C), as opposed to unweighted (linear) measurements of sound pressure level (SPL). |

Term: |
Absorption |
|
Description: |
In acoustical absorption, sound energy is converted into heat. See: Resistive Absorbers, Diaphragmatic Absorbers, Resonant Absorbers, Absorption Coefficient, Sabine. |

|
Term: |
Absorption Coefficient |
|
Description: |
The proportion of incident sound that is absorbed by a surface. Usually this is expressed as a number between 0 and 1, or a percentage. In most materials, the amount af absorption changes with the angle of incidence. The specification is normally a 'random incidence' measurement. |

Term: |
AC |
|
Description: |
Alternating Current - The common form of electricity from power plant to home/office. Its direction is reversed 60 times per second in the U.S.; 50 times in Europe. Contrast with DC. |

Term: |
AC Line Conditioner |
|
Description: |
A device inserted between the wall outlet and your equipment to isolate it from voltage spikes and unwanted high frequency signals that may be picked up by the power lines. High quality audio equipment may already have some of this kind of isolation built in. See also: AC Voltage Stabilizer. |

AC Line Protector |
|
Description: |
A device inserted between the wall outlet and your equipment to isolate it from voltage spikes and unwanted high frequency signals that may be picked up by the power lines. High quality audio equipment may already have some of this kind of isolation built in. See also: AC Voltage Stabilizer. |

|
|
Term: |
AC Voltage Stabilizer |
|
Description: |
A device inserted between the wall outlet and your equipment to maintain a constant voltage level. Used in buildings and neighborhoods where line voltage fluctuates widely because of heavy variable loads. |
