3 Top Open-Ceiling Pendant-Mount Loudspeakers on Tech Talk Ep. 4
Open-ceiling speakers are the topic of episode 4 on Pro Acoustics Tech Talk. Coltin and Nathan are comparing some of the top pendant-mount speakers from SoundTube, JBL, and Pure Resonance Audio. Enjoy!
Hey guys, welcome to another edition of Pro Acoustics Tech Talk. I'm Nathan, I'm Coltin and we're here today to talk to you about open-ceiling pendant speakers. Some of our favorites - their uses, their applications, a little bit about them, and just a few of our favorites.
All right, very good. So here are the pendant speaker options that we have. We have a JBL Control 65 P/T, Pure Resonance Audio PD6, and then a SoundTube RS600i. This is just a quick sample of some of the models of pendant speakers that are out there on the market. Basically, five and a quarter inch woofer, six-inch woofer, and a six-and-a-half-inch woofer. Just to give you some ideas of what all is out there. Also, some different manufacturers make black and white. There's also some little four-inch, three inch, three and a half inch models as well as up to eight-inch, 10 inch plus. So, tell me a little bit, Coltin, what jumps out at you here?
Yeah, so absolutely. I mean we're seeing these pendant speakers go up in many different applications. You're looking at new restaurants to retail to fitness, even some warehouses out there. So, we really want to give you a light on, you know, the different styles that you're seeing out there. And kind of guide you through this process as you're selecting what's right for you.
Yeah. If I can jump in, all three manufacturers here make great products. These are all good sounding speakers. Pendant speakers are fantastic for even coverage of wide-open areas where you might not necessarily have a sheet rock ceiling or a drop tile ceiling, but you don't necessarily want to put speakers on walls, right? Issue with speakers on walls, it's always going to be loud or the closer you get to it, with pendant speakers you can distribute it out throughout the space. And then with these speakers we also get background music or foreground level music. Is that right?
Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Yeah, you're looking at, like I said, you can put them in fitness applications to retail, to restaurant where you're just wanting basic background music to really bump up the atmosphere and make it your own, you know, make your place memorable, you know, a place to be, ultimately. So, we, we want to kind of make that clear for you and guide you through this. Tell me a little bit about what we have in front of us as far as the different sizes, you know - where are we seeing them, and what makes them unique.
I mean, SoundTube makes great products. JBL makes great products, and we're really pleased with the audio quality of the PD6 here. You also want to use these types of speakers for background or light foreground level music. If you're going to be heavier on the music side and want it to get a little bit louder, sports bars - that kind of thing, you're going to want at least a six-and-a-half-inch woofer. And then there also are subwoofers on the market available for additional bass, that kind of thing. Basically, what you have here is an open-ceiling speaker that will come with some kind of mounting point on the back. Whether there’s a couple of different positions where you can attach a carabiner that comes included, or whether it's a single eye bolt on the back.
Basically, you attach the cable per the manufacturer's instructions and attach to the back of the speaker and hang it from your open ceiling. Yeah, very simple. These can be wired one after the other, either via a four pole terminal blocks, some have 2 pole terminal blocks, which is basically just the little connector on the back. You will find on all of these pendants as well as many others, a 70-volt transformer dials for the transformer taps. So, you can select the wattage and a high impedance 70-volt environment or you have a low impedance bypass, you know, an eight-ohm bypass. So, you can just hook it up to a normal amplifier, home receiver, whatever amplifier you might have, that kind of thing for your application.
