As you begin your ceiling speaker system installation, be careful not to cross wires when installing your speakers. Wiring should always be negative to negative and positive to positive.
Speaker Wattage Tap Settings
You'll see in the speaker volume control wiring diagram that when setting speaker taps, total combined speaker wattage should not exceed the total wattage output of the amplifier minus 20% headroom buffer space. This allows the speakers to perform at full peak wattage without audio clipping. Clipping is a form of waveform distortion that occurs when an amplifier is overdriven and attempts to deliver an output wattage beyond its maximum capability. Loss of audio in your commercial speaker installation will occur as a result.
Speaker Wattage Over-Tapping
Speakers in the same room or zone should be always be tapped to the same wattage. If speakers are not tapped correctly, the higher tapped speakers will produce a louder sound that can interfere with the audio of surrounding speakers.
Unbalanced Speaker Wattage Tapping
Each zone can be tapped according to desired wattages as long as they are tapped evenly within each zone and fall within the optimal wattage output.
Multi-Zone Volume Control Wiring
The bottom section of the speaker system wiring diagram explains multi-zone volume control wiring. When wiring multiple zones with individual volume controls, wire the volume control interfaces for each zone directly to your amplifier, then wire from each volume control interface to the speakers for that zone.
