Assistive listening devices help deliver speech, music, or program audio directly to an individual listener. They can improve clarity by reducing the effects of background noise, distance, room reverberation, and other conditions that make it difficult to understand amplified audio.

An assistive listening system is the complete audio solution, which may include a transmitter, receivers, antennas, microphones, chargers, and listening accessories. An assistive listening device usually refers to an individual component, such as a receiver, headset, neckloop, transmitter, or personal amplifier.

Common technologies include FM or RF systems, infrared systems, induction hearing loops, Wi-Fi audio systems, and compatible Bluetooth broadcast audio or Auracast solutions. Each technology offers different benefits related to coverage, privacy, portability, device compatibility, and installation.

FM and RF systems use radio signals and are often selected for broad coverage, portable applications, and locations where listeners may move between areas. Infrared systems use light-based transmission that generally remains contained within a room, making them useful where signal privacy and limited room-to-room interference are priorities.
