ADA Compliance & Hearing Accessibility

Most systems comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which requires public facilities to provide equal access for people with disabilities, including those who are hard of hearing. Wide-area ALSs are covered under Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which stipulates that ALSs be provided in public places. The ADA also requires that ALS receivers be provided at no cost and specifies minimum receiver counts on a sliding scale based on seating capacity.

An assistive listening system is a wireless audio solution that sends a speaker’s voice or other audio directly to individual listeners. It improves clarity and intelligibility for people who are hard of hearing and for anyone who has difficulty hearing in large, noisy, or acoustically challenging spaces.

The system receives audio from a microphone, sound system, television, or other source and sends it through a transmitter to personal receivers used by listeners. Participants hear the audio through headphones, earphones, neckloops, hearing aids, or other compatible listening devices.

A hearing aid amplifies nearby sounds for an individual user. An assistive listening system sends the desired audio directly from the source to the listener, reducing the effects of background noise, distance, reverberation, and poor room acoustics. The two technologies can often be used together.

Common options include FM or radio-frequency systems, infrared systems, induction hearing loops, portable wireless systems, and permanently installed systems. The best technology depends on the room, required coverage, privacy needs, number of listeners, and compatibility with hearing aids or cochlear implants.

FM and RF systems use radio signals and can provide broad coverage, including through some walls and obstructions. Infrared systems use light-based transmission that remains contained within the room, making them a strong choice for courtrooms, conference rooms, classrooms, and other spaces where privacy is important.

Certain assembly areas, courtrooms, and public facilities may be required to provide an assistive listening system under applicable accessibility standards. Requirements can depend on the type of space, whether amplified audio is provided, seating capacity, receiver quantity, hearing-aid compatibility, and local regulations. A qualified professional should verify the requirements for your facility.

The required number of receivers depends on the venue’s seating capacity and applicable accessibility requirements. Some receivers may also need to be compatible with hearing aids or cochlear implants through neckloops or other coupling devices.
