The C-38B is an all-purpose, large-diaphragm condenser microphone with a proven track record of reliability in broadcast production, music recording studios, and other applications requiring powerful performance, versatile operation, and simple microphone setup. Ideal for vocal and instrument recording, this microphone is particularly adept at handling loud instruments such as percussion and wind instruments. Its condenser element provides switchable omnidirectional and unidirectional polar patterns, offering control over the pickup angle for flexibility in a variety of recording scenarios.

The Sony C-38B features a function select switch with five positions: OFF, M (full-range response), M1 (slight low-frequency attenuation), V1 (low-frequency attenuation), and V2 (severe low-frequency attenuation). Its improved amplifier provides a dynamic range of more than 116 dB, with a flat frequency response and sharp directional characteristics in both uni-directional and omni-directional modes. A low-cut filter switch helps eliminate low-frequency noise and proximity effect, while the -8 dB pad switch adds headroom and minimizes distortion from transient peaks. The FET output stage delivers high signal gain and a low noise floor for clear sound reproduction.

Designed for reliable performance, the C-38B features vibration-resistant construction that provides excellent shielding against external magnetic fields and helps prevent distortion. It supports both internal battery power and standardized 48V phantom power, offering flexible powering options for studio and broadcast applications.
